"with the proliferation of issues and a scarcity of resources to address them all, leaders inside and outside government are turning to the principles of participation, collaboration, transparency, and efficiency to address the challenges facing our country and the world." - Tim O'Reilly

Geospatial Working Group
Most government agencies use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to help in planning and organizing their geographic data. GIS is not limited to federal use; local and state governments also use GIS to keep track of properties, public works, roads, etc. The amount of public data that is stored and parsed in GIS software is tremendous, so citizens have a vested interest in making sure that data is publicly accessible, and that agencies who use GIS are not locked in to one vendor's software.
